Nagaki Mitsuru

Born in 1950 in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, Sensei Nagaki Mitsuru began his journey in martial arts with a strong focus on judo during his early years. From a young age, he demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication, and many believed he had a bright future in the discipline. However, his path took a significant turn when he enrolled at Nihon University. It was there that he encountered the world of Shotokan Karate under the mentorship of the renowned Sensei Abe Keigo. This meeting would prove to be a defining moment in Nagaki’s life.

Under Abe Sensei’s guidance, Nagaki shifted his full attention to karate and began what would become a lifelong dedication to the art. His commitment, discipline, and passion propelled him to the top levels of competitive karate. A holder of the prestigious 8th Dan black belt, Sensei Nagaki is widely recognized not only for the technical precision of his movements but also for his versatility and achievements in both Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring) — a rare feat among karate practitioners.

Sensei Nagaki’s impact extends far beyond his personal accomplishments. As a coach and mentor, he has nurtured and produced numerous elite athletes, including several world champions. His leadership and teaching philosophy are highly respected throughout the global karate community. His ability to bring out the best in his students has made him a sought-after figure, not only among karate but also in the broader field of sports training. Many professionals look to his methods as a model for cultivating both technical skill and mental strength in athletes.

Despite his seniority and status, Sensei Nagaki continues to set an example through his personal discipline. His own training regimen remains rigorous, and his determination has led him to set a remarkable record — winning 27 consecutive master class championships, an achievement that stands as a testament to his enduring excellence and perseverance.

Today, Sensei Nagaki Mitsuru serves as the Chief Instructor and Founder/Director of the Japan Shotokan Karate Association (JSKA) Headquarters. He is also a respected member of the JSKA Shihankai (Council of Masters), where his insights and leadership continue to shape the future of traditional Shotokan Karate.
